Sunday Brunch ~ Eating Bugs with Stefan Gates

Mr.R and I used to enjoy watching Something for the Weekend on Sunday morning when we lived in France.
Now we're back in Blighty :( we have started to watch it again, well, sort of. It's not called SFTW anymore, and it's moved from BBC2 to Channel 4.
Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer are still presenting and cooking though, so not everything has changed. :)

This morning as we sat watching, the main thing that caught our attention were the bugs; crickets, mealworms, big-bottom ants, and bolognese.
Bolognese may not sound like bugs, but it was made using mealworms.

The bug section of this mornings Sunday Brunch was courtesy of Stefan Gates.
You may or may not know who Stefan Gates is. He's a TV presenter who's probably most well known for his 'Cooking in the Danger Zone' TV programme. This programme is about cooking and eating food from some of the most dangerous places in the World.
Rather him than me!

This morning Stefan Gates was hoping to tempt the guests on Sunday Brunch, and the viewers to eat bugs.
Stefan says that they are the future, and we'll all be acting bugs soon.
He also said 2 billion people eat bugs as part of their daily diet.

I'm not a fan of bugs, although I've never knowingly eaten any.
Mr.R on the other hand, is a fan. When we were in Chang Mai in Thailand my hubby bought a huge bag of bugs from the night market. He then decided to take his new friends for a drink. As we sat propping up the bar in our local drinking hole, knocking back big bottles of icy cold Chang, Mr.R began munching of his bugs.
Despite his repeated offers, I politely refused to join in.
Mr.R had a wide selection of bugs including crickets, mealworms, and a huge cockroach.
Eeeeeew!
There's not enough Chang lager in the World to wash that down comfortably. ;) :o

Anyway, the guests on this mornings Sunday Brunch seemed to enjoy eating the bugs Stefan Gates had brought in for them.
The blokes from the band The 1975 were happily munching the bugs like bar snacks.
Diana Vickers also tried a few, although she didn't seem to enjoy them as much as the 1975's did. Racing driver Susie Wolff was not keen at all, she didn't try any of the bugs.

If Stefan Gates is correct, and in the near future we'll all be eating bugs, I'll have to become a vegetarian. Haha! :o
There's no way I'm eating bugs. Yuck!
Stefan said the bugs will probably be included in various well-known foods, rather than being served in their obvious bug form.
I can just see it now, fast food will be something like this - Big Mac, and a Big Bug Burger please! :o

If the future of food is bugs, I'll get my protein from beans, they're much prettier and don't have legs that may stick in my throat. ;)

Have you eaten bugs?
Would you eat bugs?
